Best VMC/ (Negative)Courses?

When using the 'best VMC/course' display in 'Wind Texts' under the 'Winds' tab in VRTool,
there are situations when the suggested course is expressed as
'-16' or '-22'. How should I interpret this suggestion? The VMC shown in these wind grid squares is
seemingly unattainable except when traversing the square from a certain angle. I can see that when the boat is very near the mark, the best VMC and course will probably change during the traverse of a wind grid area, but wonder what is the exact meaning of this "negative" suggested course and how best to use it when steering.
VRTool is a GREAT tool and has improved my real world sailing and understanding of routing to a great degree. Thanks for everyone who has helped to create and support this great tool!
